As Kerala Debates Poverty Eradication, a Fake Video of a Journalist Goes Viral — Here’s the Truth

While Kerala was abuzz with the debate over the elimination of extreme poverty, fake videos began to circulate. A video surfaced showing Manorama News anchor Nisha Purushothaman appearing to criticize the Congress for obstructing the government’s declaration on the eradication of extreme poverty. Nisha later clarified in a Facebook post that the video was fake.

Claim:

A Facebook user shared a video on October 31, 2025, with a Malayalam caption that translates to, “No matter how much you hide it, you can’t stop the truth — even if it’s Manorama.” The post allegedly shows Nisha Purushothaman criticizing the Congress for hindering the ruling government’s efforts to bring progress and development to the state. The post received around 4,900 shares and 1,600 likes.

Here are the facts:

We analysed the viral video and noticed that it shows Nisha Purushothaman during Counter Point, a political news analysis program on Manorama News. Taking this as a cue, we performed a keyword search using keywords such as “Nisha Purushothaman” and “Counter point,” which led us to a YouTube video from October 13, shared on Manorama News’s official channel.

We looked into the keyframes of the viral video alongside those of the YouTube video and discovered they are identical, confirming that the viral video is a segment taken from the former.

The discrepancy in audio between the two videos and the unusual lip synchronization in the viral video suggest that it has been manipulated.

Furthermore, Nisha Purushothaman shared the viral video on her official Facebook account, captioning it to indicate that the video is fake. According to a Manorama News report dated November 1, the channel has decided to take legal action against all accounts disseminating such videos.

The analysis of the viral video reveals that the audio has been doctored and superimposed on a genuine video. It has been confirmed that the video circulating online is fake.
