Weaponizing Tragedy: How the Rape and Murder of a Seven-Year-Old Became a Communal Tool Online

When the body of a seven-year-old girl was recovered from a river in Uttar Pradesh, the tragedy was quickly weaponized by Hindutva-linked accounts. By stripping the accused, Vidya Sagar Yadav, of his identity and rebranding him as “Muhammad Akram,” bad actors turned a horrific crime into a tool for communal hate. We unpack the anatomy of this viral hoax.

A claim that “a Muslim man raped his own niece and threw her into a river” is being widely circulated by right-wing Hindutva accounts on social media, are once again twisting facts to spread blatant Islamophobia across platforms.

A video showing the recovery of a young girl’s body from a river has been shared extensively on X and Facebook over the past few days. The posts claim that a man named “Muhammad Akram” raped his niece and threw her into the water.

The video has gained significant traction, drawing a flood of comments attacking  the Muslim community and stoking fears about what they might do to Hindus.

While some users pointed out that the narrative appeared misleading and questioned the identity being circulated — with a few alleging that the accused was in fact Hindu — Hindutva-linked accounts continued to amplify the original claim without offering any clarification.

We investigated the origins of the viral video and found that the incident occurred in Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. Contrary to the claims circulating online, the accused is a Hindu man named Vidya Sagar. News reports published at the time of the incident confirm the identity of the accused and make no mention of the communal angle now being  propagated on social media.

What did the Hindutva handles say?

On February 14, a handle named “Hindutva Don” shared a video on X (formerly Twitter). The video, which carries a sensitive content warning, shows a man recovering the body of a young girl from a river.

The caption read: “Mohammad Akram raped his own brother’s nine-year-old daughter & then threw her into the river.” As of February 21, the post had garnered 129,000 views, 544 likes, 344 comments, and 416 reposts. The account has more than 6,300 followers.

“If moh@mmad is the name… then what else can you expect?” one comment read.

Several other comments echoed similar Islamophobic sentiments. “That’s like his own daughter!! Mf’s, deleting them is the only option!” another user wrote, as the comment section filled with communal abuse and calls for hostility.

Similar accounts, such as “Bhakt Prahlad”—which has approximately 35,000 followers—had also shared this video with similar claims. Their caption stated: “JIHADISTS NOT LEAVING THEIR “BROTHER’s DAUGHTER! If this is what they do with their own family’s daughter, will they leave Hindu Kafirs’ daughters? This post has also gained significant traction.

Unpacking the false claim

Several users pointed out in the comment section that the accused was not Muslim.

“Liar and shameless HindutvaDon, the name of the accused is Vidya Sagar, not Mohammad Akram! Will you now accuse the entire community for the actions of a r@pist?” one user wrote.

Others tagged the police in their replies, questioning why no action had been taken against those spreading fake news and communal misinformation.

How did we verify?

We ran a keyword search using the terms “Muhammad Akram” and “rape niece”, but found no credible news reports matching the claim during the corresponding period.

Subsequently, we searched using keyframes from the viral video. Through this, we found news reports—mainly in Hindi and local languages—about a man in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, who raped his seven-year-old niece and threw her into a river. The timeline and location corresponded exactly with our search.

The only difference was the name of the accused. It was not Muhammad Akram, but Vidyasagar Yadav.

The reports stated that the incident occurred on February 11. According to these accounts, the accused allegedly abducted his seven-year-old niece, a Class 2 student, from her primary school after misleading the principal into releasing her on the pretext of a domestic errand.

Then he took the girl to a wheat field, where he allegedly raped and murdered her before disposing of her body along the banks of the Jharahi River.

In an apparent attempt to deflect suspicion, he initially joined villagers in searching for the missing child. However, he was later apprehended after a witness reported seeing the two together, and the school principal confirmed his identity.

The recovery of the body triggered strong local outrage. Residents staged a road blockade as authorities transported the victim’s body for a post-mortem examination.

For further confirmation, we examined the official social media handles of the Deoria Police. On February 14, the police clarified through their verified X account that the accused is Vidya Sagar Yadav, not “Mohammed Akram,” as claimed in the viral posts.

In the statement they shared, the police added that the accused was arrested on the morning of February 13 near Pratappur. It also stated that the post-mortem report confirmed the heinous crime. According to the police, further legal procedures are underway, including a DNA test.

The viral claim identifying the accused as “Muhammad Akram” is false. Credible news reports and police statements confirm that the accused is Vidya Sagar Yadav, and there is no basis for the communal narrative being circulated online. The misleading posts continue to fuel division despite clear evidence to the contrary.
